The Atlanta-based Centers For Disease Control and Prevention has launched a base of operations for a nationwide investigation into illnesses from e-cigarettes.

The Georgia Department of Public Health said Monday two cases of vaping illness have been reported in the state.

Nationwide, five people have died and more than 450 possible cases of vaping-related lung disease are being investigated by the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention.

The city of Smyrna voted unanimously on Tuesday to raise the smoking age from 18 to 21.

 

The ordinance, introduced by Councilman Tim Gould,  prohibits people under the age of 21 from buying or possessing tobacco products and electronic smoking devices.

Augusta’s smoke-free ordinance went into effect on Jan. 1. It outlaws smoking and vaping in most public buildings, and requires smokers and vapers outside to stay a “reasonable distance” away.

Georgia ranks 47th in the nation when it comes to funding programs to prevent kids from using tobacco, according to a recent report that looks at what states are doing with money from the 1998 tobacco settlement.

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends Georgia spend $106 million per year to prevent tobacco use among teenagers and help adults stop smoking, the state only uses about 1 percent of that, John Schachter with the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids said.

E-cigarettes hit the market not too long ago as an aid to quit smoking. The CDC reported in 2015 that more than 9 million American adults vape regularly. Juuls are the new trendy e-cigarette that have become very popular among teens. It's an USB size e-cigarette that uses "pods" for the source of nicotine. College and high school campuses are having issues with the amount of teenagers who are taking on this new nicotine fad.
