The Center for Puppetry Arts is spending this week honoring Caroll Spinney, who spent decades puppeteering the iconic characters Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch on Sesame Street.

Spinney died Sunday, Dec. 8, at his home in Connecticut following complications with dystonia, a neurological disorder. He was 85.

Georgia is among the top 11 states when it comes to most prescription opioid overdose deaths. President Trump declared the opioid crisis a national public health emergency in 2017.

Earlier this year, state agencies received $10.3 million in federal funding to expand access to medication-assisted treatment for opioid addiction and overdose. While federal funding could make a dent in adult dependency, Sesame Street aims to support children affected by parental addiction.

Since the 1960s, the crew at "Sesame Street" has helped generations of kids learn their numbers and ABC's. They also have explored tougher topics, introducing children to realities that may be hard to understand or discuss.

Writers and creators on "Sesame Street" have worked over the past few years to weave in stories of parental incarceration, autism and food insecurity. This year, the show debuted a story about homelessness through the character of Lily.

Last year, Julien Turner took an extra credit biology assignment and turned it into a viral music video about the differences between mitosis and meiosis. The rising junior's video made it all the way to the people who work on "Sesame Street." Now, Julien and his brother are creating an educational music video for the show. Julien spoke with GPB's Leah Fleming about the project.

You might not know his name, but you’ll definitely recognize his voice. Caroll Spinney plays the role of Big Bird on the Sesame Street, where he also does the voice of Oscar the Grouch. Spinney has been with the show since its inception in 1969. We re-visit a conversation we had with him in 2015.
