Afropunk is a well-known music festival produced by black artists. It is an international festival, but it will be in Atlanta this weekend. Afropunk goes beyond just entertainment. Its "Solution Sessions" are an effort to address and tackle ongoing issues in the black community. On Second Thought speaks to Ashleigh Shackelford, Bridget Todd and Yves Jeffcoat, three of the featured speakers to hear their messages.


Emory University is hosting a three-day, live reading of The Iliad, and On Second Thought host Virginia Prescott is among the orators. Delve into the classic tale with Stan Lombardo, a professor emeritus of classics at the University of Kansas, who wrote a modern translation of it.

East Point has an urban agriculture plan aimed at improving access to green spaces and minimizing food deserts. GPB’s Ross Terrell went to check it out.

The median home price in Georgia is on track to nearly double from 2012 prices in the coming years, and wages haven’t kept up. Georgia cities can be especially expensive. Atlanta rents have spiked in the past decade at the same time the number of units classified as affordable have been dropping.

GPB’s Ross Terrell recently discussed housing costs with U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson when Carson was in Atlanta for a conference on emerging strategies to address affordable housing.

It might be hard to live within them, but most people have budgets. And, sometimes budgeting means tough spending choices like deciding between buying medicine or food.

For GPB’s energy seriesreporter Ross Terrell got a close look at just how hard it can be for people on tight budgets to pay their utility bills. He met a woman named Barbara C., who talked about working at a factory for 35 years and, upon retiring, found herself struggling to keep her lights on.

The New England Patriots are once again Super Bowl champions, defeating the Los Angeles Rams in Atlanta at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. This was the team's sixth overall win, tying them with the Pittsburgh Steelers for most Super Bowl wins.

As thousands of fans headed out of Atlanta Monday morning, "Morning Edition" producer Taylor Gantt and GPB reporter Ross Terrell joined "On Second Thought" to break down the highlights of the game. They discussed Maroon 5's halftime show, the role social media played throughout the game and how the city managed visitors over the event weekend.

Super Bowl 53 gets underway in less than one month. The action will take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on February 3. Before the game and entertainment, the Super Bowl committee and the arts advocacy group, WonderRoot, are collaborating on murals to highlight the city’s civil rights and social justice legacy. The Off the Wall project seeks to elevate key stories from Atlanta’s pursuit of civil and human rights. Eleven muralists were chosen to create designs based on community conversations.

GPB’s Ross Terrell and WonderRoot executive director Chris Appleton joined “On Second Thought” to discuss the Off the Wall initiative.

Atlanta United is heading to the MLS Cup Final on Dec. 8, and this weekend marks the SEC Championship between Georgia and Alabama.
