Fatal drug overdoses in Cobb County dropped year over year according to new data, but  officials aren’t comfortable calling the drop a trend. 

According to the Cobb County Medical Examiner’s annual report, 2018 drug deaths dropped by nearly a quarter from 2017. Opioid related fatalities dropped by more than half. But overdose deaths were almost twice as common as deaths from car crashes.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there have been more than 200,000 opioid-related deaths in the United States over the last two decades. Georgia has some of the nation's hardest-hit counties. White users have largely been the face of the epidemic, but the problem affects every demographic.

The life expectancy of Americans is shorter for the second consecutive year, dropping from 78.7 to 78.6 years, according to the latest report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

This year, more than 1,400 people in Georgia are expected to die from drug overdoses. That’s according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Many will be in their 20s. They will still be thought of as kids by their grieving parents.

Some of the victims of addiction were represented Tuesday night in a room on the University of North Georgia's campus in Cumming. While the maximum occupancy was only 268 people, nearly 350 souls were honored by candles in teacups.

The only pharmacist serving in Congress said the opioid epidemic needs legislation that empowers his industry.

Substance use disorder keeps men and women in their prime out of work and costs the economy billions of dollars, U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Pooler) said Tuesday during the National Prescription Drug Abuse and Heroin Summit in Atlanta. The conference is the largest on opioid addiction and includes more than 3,000 officials, experts and advocates.
