Big Mac. Whopper. Thickburger. The names of fast food burgers make a promise: lots of calories, delivered quickly.

At least one fast food restaurant in Georgia has bucked that trend. At the Dairylane in Sandersville, about halfway between Macon and Augusta, their burgers are kind of like a trip back in time. As American waistlines continue to expand, we may find we wish other fast food joints would take that trip, too.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formally known as SNAP, was created in 1939 to help Americans who earn little or no money to buy food. In 2008, congressional leaders placed food programs like SNAP in the farm bill. That's when food assistance was seen as a largely urban issue. 

The idea was to encourage lawmakers with districts in cities to support rural agriculture. The SNAP map has since shifted. New U.S. Department of Agriculture numbers show SNAP participation is now highest in rural areas.

And then she got a little fired up.

Without ever naming President Trump, the former first lady took aim at changes the administration announced last week that weaken some of the school nutrition standards she championed.

The Trump administration has said it wants to remove burdensome regulation, and on Monday it served up a taste of what that looks like when it comes to two aspects of food policy: school lunch and calorie labels on menus.

Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue announced a plan to delay a mandate that would require schools to further reduce sodium levels in the meals they serve. In addition, Perdue wants to give the green light to schools that want to serve some grains that aren't whole-grain rich.

According to a report last year by the group The State of Obesity, black adults in Georgia have a 10% higher obesity rate compared to white adults. That gap is slightly lower than the national average. Soul food is a major staple in Southern culture, particularly among African-Americans. Is it to blame for obesity rates and other health disorders?
