On this edition of Political Rewind, big issues bubbling up at the state capitol: legislators renew their interest in state oversight of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and a  possible return of paper balloting across Georgia.

People traveling through Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport struggled to get home Sunday after a power outage there forced hundreds of flight cancellations.

Officials announced that power had been fully restored to the airport shortly after midnight.

The power went out early Sunday afternoon and hundreds of flights at the world's busiest airport ended up canceled. Many travelers were stuck in grounded planes for hours.

One by one, jetliners fired up their engines and roared down runway 27R at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta.


It was just before noon on a sunny Friday morning, and air traffic controllers were in a hurry to get the planes airborne before the runway closed to all traffic.


Well, almost all traffic.

The neighborhoods surrounding Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport do not look like they once did a few decades ago. But unlike the airport itself, most haven’t grown. As the airport has slowly become one of, if not the busiest airport in the world, the communities around it have shrunk or disappeared completely.

The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Atlanta's role as a hub for international travel doesn't make Georgia more vulnerable to the Zika virus.

Dr. Tom Frieden, Director of the CDC, told reporters Tuesday that any kind of travel poses a risk.

Some travelers headed through the south security checkpoint at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport will now get to use a new automated screening system that’s the first of its kind in the country.

The Transportation Security Administration launched the new system Tuesday and will re-open the entire checkpoint Wednesday.

Big Changes Coming For Hartsfield-Jackson Airport

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said big changes are in store for Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport with the ouster of general manager Miguel Southwell.

Though Reed did not give specifics as to why he fired Southwell last Friday, he did give a picture of the impacts the change would have.

Delta Air Lines Resumes Service To Brussels

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines has resumed service to Brussels, Belgium less than a month after the terrorist attacks there. A flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport landed at the city’s Zaventem Airport Friday morning.
