The Masters, one of golf's most prestigious events, tees off this morning at Augusta National Golf Club.

 

Defending champion Patrick Reed will be looking to earn his second green jacket, the treasured prize bestowed on every Masters winner.

The Masters begins tomorrow at the legendary Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. It's among professional golf's most prestigious tournaments, bringing in big names like Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods.

Last week, the golf course made history, hosting its first women's tournament: the Augusta National Women's Amateur. On Second Thought spoke with Bob Harig, senior golf writer for ESPN who joined the program from Augusta, about what it took to get women on the famous green. Anya Alvarez, former Ladies Professional Golf Association player and women's sports journalist, also joined the conversation from New York.

The first ever Augusta National Women’s Amateur Tournament ended this weekend with Wake Forest senior Jennifer Kupcho coming out on top.

 

Kupcho bested 71 other golfers to win the tournament, finishing 10 strokes under par to close out the event on Saturday.

When Althea Gibson became the first black woman to play in the Ladies Professional Golf Association in 1963, she defied discriminatory norms. Segregation at golf courses was common, and white men dominated the sport of golf. 

Today, 90 percent of golfers are still men, and most of them are white. That can have economic implications for minorities and women since golf courses are known as common places for networking and business deals.

The first week of April is Masters week in Augusta, bringing a steady stream of corporate jets and private planes to ferry golfers and guests in and out of Daniel Field.

Becky Shealy, the airport’s vice-president of business development, helps manage the private terminal.

“In a normal week we’ll have anywhere from 12 to 15 flights a day, and this time of year we’ll have anywhere from 50 to 100,” she said.

Billy Payne is retiring as chairman of Augusta National and the Masters, ending 11 years of substantial change that included the club having its first female members and playing a leading role in growing the game around the world.

With severe storms bearing down on Augusta National, the club has been shut down for the second time this week.

Masters officials suspended play at 1:25 p.m. EDT Wednesday, cutting short the final afternoon of practice before the start of the tournament as well as the popular Par 3 Contest.

Fans were ordered to leave the course as line of dangerous storms swept across the Deep South, sparking tornado warnings in Georgia and neighboring South Carolina.

Augusta National was also forced to close Monday because of heavy rains.

Last week, legendary golfer Arnold Palmer passed away at the age of 87. Palmer won seven major championships over his career, including four Masters Championships in Augusta, GA. He was businessman, a philanthropist, and an inspiration to people across all walks of life.
