Julian Gressel scored in the 10th minute, Josef Martinez added a late goal and defending champion Atlanta United beat the Philadelphia Union 2-0 on Thursday night to advance to the Eastern Conference final.

United will host Toronto FC on Wednesday night. Toronto beat top-seed New York City FC 2-1 on the road Wednesday night.

The playoff run for MLS Cup defending champions Atlanta United continues with a conference semifinal match against Philadelphia Union. The winner will go on to face Toronto FC in the conference final and will be one step close to playing for the league title.

Atlanta United may have pulled off a victory Wednesday night, but it was not enough to carry the team into the next round of the CONCACAF Champions League tournament.

Atlanta United suffered a 3-0 defeat in Mexico on Wednesday in their first game against Monterrey in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals.

United went down early in the match, at the 15-minute mark, after a foul in the penalty box set up a Nicolas Sanchez goal that put Monterrey ahead for good.

On Monday, the City of Atlanta held its first sports championship victory parade since 1995 when the Braves won the World Series.  

Atlanta United won the Superbowl of Major League Soccer Saturday, defeating the Portland Timbers 2 – 0 in the MLS Cup.

In just two seasons, the team has broken every fan attendance record in the league, setting a new one over the weekend with 73,000 people at Mercedes Benz Stadium. Atlanta’s unique fan zeal was on display at today’s parade.

Atlanta Stadium Official Says New Facility Ready In 3 Months

Workers are racing to complete Atlanta's new $1.5 billion stadium project in the next three months after ongoing roof issues have delayed the facility's opening.

Mercedes-Benz Stadium general manager Scott Jenkins told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the building is 90 percent done, and "is looking great."

The biggest holdup has been construction of the roof. Jenkins said the challenge with the roof has been installing the eight steel petals that would enable it to retract and open like a camera lens.

After securing their first win on the road last weekend, Atlanta United FC put together another signature performance to capture their first home win on Saturday.

Atlanta United (2-1) shut out the Chicago Fire (1-2) by a score of 4-0 in the afternoon contest.

Atlanta United Addressing Anti-Gay Chant At First Match

Atlanta United said Monday it is "taking measures internally" to address an anti-gay chant used by some fans attending the team's first Major League Soccer match.

United spokesman Winkler said the team was aware of the chant during Sunday night's 2-1 loss to the New York Red Bulls. In a statement to The Associated Press, the team said the chants "have no place in our matches" and fans participating in those chants will be removed from games.
