Political Rewind: Michael Thurmond Explores Overlooked Athens History

On this edition of Political Rewind, a conversation with DeKalb County CEO and Georgia historian, Michael Thurmond. In his book Thurmond brings to light lesser known stories of African-American men and women in Athens, GA.

Through extensive research and interviews, he explores themes and historical events in the northeastern part of the state that is often ignored and overlooked.


Originally published in 1978, the third edition of A Story Untold: Black Men and Women in Athens History is the result of Thurmond’s curiosity in his own history and the history of the generations before his hometown of Clarke County.  

After discovering that scarce information was available, he researched and discovered the history for himself. Thurmond has devoted much of his life to public service as a legislator, education leader, state labor commissioner and through his work as the current CEO of DeKalb County.
