Apr 4, 2019

The man who ruled the Augusta Judicial Circuit Superior Court for 38 years has died.

The Augusta Chronicle reports retired Judge William M. Fleming Jr. died Saturday. He was 94.

A funeral Mass will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with burial to follow in Westover Memorial Park.

Judge J. Carlisle Overstreet, who became chief judge when Fleming retired in 2007, says Fleming left a legacy of public service few can match. He says Fleming taught him patience and not to jump to conclusions.

Appointed by Gov. Lester Maddox in 1968, Fleming also served in the Georgia General Assembly for nine years. He became chief judge in 1972.

Fleming was a World War II veteran and served in the Army Air Corps.
