GPB Panel Celebrates 'Women As Agents Of Change'

Mar 28, 2019

As Women's History Month draws to a close, On Second Thought celebrates women working for change around the world. Dining for Women, Peace is Loud and the Association of Junior Leagues International joined with Georgia Public Broadcasting for a panel called "Women as Agents of Change."

On Second Thought host Virginia Prescott spoke with filmmaker Abigail E. Disney, Razia Jan from the organization Razia's Ray of Hope and Elvia Raquec from Women's Justice Initiative.

Disney is also the president and CEO of the documentary production company Fork Films. Her PBS series, Women, War & Peace II, aired on March 25 and 26.

Jan's organization, Razia's Ray of Hope, expands educational opportunities for girls and women in Afghanistan. The organization launched the Zabuli Education Center, a K-12 school for girls and a training program for midwives in the rural Deh'Subz district of Afghanistan.

In her role at the Women's Justice Initiative, Raquec oversees and implements educational and advocacy programs in indigenous communities in Guatemala. The organization provides access to legal services, education and leadership development to Maya women all over the country.
