Atlanta United FC Beats Rival Orlando In Front Of Huge Crowd

Jul 2, 2018

Saturday in Atlanta was a day of impressive numbers for soccer fans.

Home team Atlanta United FC beat rival Orlando City SC 4-0. The win happened in front of a single crowd bigger than the combined crowds from both World Cup games that day.

Nearly 72,000 fans packed Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Team goalkeeper Brad Guzan commented to atlutd.com on being part of the day’s most-attended soccer game.

“I say week in and week out that it speaks volumes about our fans and it speaks volumes about our city to have this turnout week after week after week," Guzan said. "You don’t take it grated and we’re lucky to be a part of it.”

For comparison, Russia’s Fisht Olympic Stadium hosted Uruguay and Portugal, while Kazan Arena hosted France and Argentina. Neither venue reached capacity, roughly 40,000 and 45,000 respectively.

The win by Atlanta United put the team standing at 37, five points ahead of the New York Red Bulls, placing the team first in the Eastern Conference, according to a Major League Soccer ranking.

Orlando City’s standing after the match was 19, which put the team in ninth place.

Next up for the team, Atlanta will play FC Dallas, which holds second place in the Western Conference ahead of the July 4 match.
