Early Voting Numbers For Runoff Much Lower Than General Election

Dec 3, 2018

The end of the in-person early voting period for the Dec. 4 runoff election saw a decrease in turnout from the Nov. 6 general election.

According to data from the secretary of state's office, more than 400,000 Georgians cast their ballot by mail or in person ahead of Tuesday's race.

That's significantly lower than the 2.1 million that voted early in November's contest.

More than 100,000 mail-in ballots have been sent out, but not yet returned. A settlement reached in federal court last Friday now means that any of those ballots postmarked by Election Day and received by Friday, Dec. 7 must be counted.

Statewide, runoffs will decide the next secretary of state and Public Service Commissioner for District 3.
